Update of what happened at the murder point of Alexis, at Exarchia on the memorial ceremony by us that was organized for last night. As was told you yesterday on an earlier post, police was everywhere in Exarchia, but this did not prevent the people from actually coming and reaching the alley that exactly one year ago Alexis was murdered. I estimate that around 1000 people were gathered there, and on exactly 21:10, the hour that Alexis was shot dead, there was a minute of silence. Then the chanting started… COPS PIGS MURDERERS. More chanting continued and a, not planned by anyone, demo started towards the Exarchia square, where it stopped and the people stayed there continuing chanting. Police started surrounding this demo and gathering, but the comrades moved effectively enough in order to have a clear pathway for the people to leave the square after the end. A lot of people returned back to the murder point.

An another detail from yesterdays demo, that you will not see on any news coverage and Media of Mass Propaganda… look at this photo athens.indymedia.org

A policeman of the Delta Force, after they attacked the demo and fell of their motorbikes draws a gun against the demonstrators.

7 12 09 demo was also big, with nearly 10000 students and teenagers at the streets of Athens. Again since the beginning of the demo at Propylea, there were clashes with the police, the demonstrators were throwing stones and fruits against them and they were responding with chemicals and stud grenades. The demo started with the police on its side, and this created problems and during the demo as on various points the police was using chemicals. The police started an extensive use of chemicals especially when the demo reached close to the Syntagma square, and as a result of that some teenagers had to flee and hide in the entrances of buildings or shops who were open at that time. There the demo basically broke in various smaller parts as the police attack was big, but the demonstrators were responding by throwing stones against the policemen. The demo, or to be more accurate the remaining of the demo tried to return back to Propylea where it would end but this was impossible as the way back was blocked by RIOT Police. Police had orders not to let the students reach the Propylea and the University area as yesterday in order to prevent the buildings from being taken over again. The main part of the demo finally managed to reach the Polytechnic area in order a general assembly to take place. Outside the polytechnic was surrounded by big numbers of police and clashes soon started. Some road blocks were formed and after some time road blocks were also formed in Exarchia area, at the square that is located a few meters far away of the polytechnic.

More than 20 arrests were made 7 11 09, not sure of the exact number.Student and school demos took place nearly in whole Greece, in occasions also with clashes against the police. An another demo is called for tomorrow.

Update 17 00 7/12/09

  • 17.55 GMT+2 The administration building of the Aristotle University in Thessaloniki has just been occupied by students in protest against the violation of the academic asylum for a third consecutive day.
  • From Saturday until Monday, at least 823 people have been detained across the country; of these, 159 have officially been arrested and charged. These are only the confirmed numbers; actual numbers might be higher.

Update 15 50 7/12/09

The student demonstration in Athens ended a few hours ago. Police presence was once again heavy; at least 19 people were arrested today and 35 were detained in a protest that hardly had any clashes at all. A few hundred people ended up the Polytechnic, were up to half an hour ago there were clashes with the cops. We left Exarcheia square twenty minutes ago and there were many people there, too.

We know that one high school student is seriously injured by the cops, mass media confirm this, but no further details so far.

In Thessaloniki Today 7 11 09 a demonstration even bigger than yesterday took place. I believe about 8000-10000. Many high school students were there and also workers and students. The demo was attacked initially with chemical gasses, but did not break and then did not allow the police to approach the demo, throwing rocks. After the demonstration, an assembly of the students was planned in the Polytechnic University. Without any reason, special police forces entered for third time the last tree days into the university,  hit people, throwed chemical gasses into the building and detained or arrested some. Their intention was 100% to kill or wound severely someone. The students occupied the central building of the university and an assembly (not only students, after the last events everybody will take part) will take place there.

The state is clearly trying to terrorize the population, but until now the only thing that they achieve is to make everybody angry, and more people come out to the streets. Many are afraid to go out but support the demonstrators, opening their houses to hide people that are chased by the killers.

The streets will win, or else the terror will win…

The photos are from Athens (just two out of hundreds)

Statement by the Occupied Athens Polytechnic, 00.25 Dec 7

Monday, December 7, 2009

Since the ministries say nothing, we will. The military-type raid of the Anarchist Space “Resalto” in Keratsini. A space of intervention and counter-information which, as all spaces of struggle, never covered its animosity to those repressing and its solidarity to the repressed, openly and publicly.

…something annoying for the minister.

The arrest, on the same night, of all who gathered in support of the comrades in a nearby square and following, in the town hall of Nikaia, as well as those who gathered at the point of assassination of Alexis Grigoropoulos a year later.

…something annoying for the minister.

Of the police-occupied Athens, the 13,000 cops, the body controls, the blockage of the Polytechnic, their anxiety to repress the demonstration of December 6th.

…but the minister will be annoyed much further.

The plan of terrorisation that he has put into practice is bound to fail.

The colleagues of the murderer cops who swarmed Athens today caused no fear, they caused rage.

The arrests of the comrades and the heavy charges against them cause no awkwardness, they bring solidarity.

The attacks on spaces, occupations and places of struggle will bring no isolation, but even higher doggedness and crouch.

NO HOSTAGE IN THE HANDS OF THE MURDERERS

FREEDOM TO THE 22 COMRADES OF RESALTO, CHARGED WITH FELONIES AND TO THE 43 COMRADES IN SOLIDARITY WHO ARE UNDER TRIAL RIGHT NOW AT THE COURTHOUSE OF PIREAUS

FREEDOM TO THE 12 ARRESTEES OF EXARCHEIA, IN THE FABRICATED SHOW OF POLICE FORCE

RESIST THEIR PLAN FOR TOTALITARIAN RESISTANCE

MASS RESPONSE TO THE ASSASSINATIONS, THE BEATINGS, THE ARRESTS, THE MEDIA LIES

THEY ARE GOING TO LOSE THE BET OF SOCIAL CONSENSUS

EVERYONE TO THE STREETS.

Live from Occupied Athens: A timeline of tonight’s events

  • 23.36 GMT+2 To the people asking about the “injured” rector of the Athens University: This is only coming from mainstream media and we can only be very suspicious about this piece of news, as this injury could be used as pretext for storming the Athens University, which seems to be something the cops are considering. The rector did walk past two people reporting for the Occupied London blog, just outside the university. Both confirm he seemed more pissed of than “injured”. At the same time, mainstream media report that he is in intensive care!
  • 22:18 GMT+2 About 1000 people are concentrated in Exarchia Square. Protest in Athens’ Police headquarters where 177 people are detained.
  • 21. 50 GMT+2 1000 people are marching from the place where Alexis was killed to the Exarchia Square.
  • 21.00 GMT+2 About 1000 people were gathered to the place where Alexis was killed by the cops.
  • 20.25 GMT +2 Confirmed, the 21 people arrested in the anarchist space Resalto, yesterday, are all charged under the anti-terrorist law! The 41 people arrested during the eviction of the Town Hall of Keratsini are appearing before the prosecuting judge now – 9pm on a Sunday night! Democracy works overtime, it seems.
  • 19.31 GMT+2 At least three people were run over on purpose by motorcycle police at today’s demonstration. One woman is in critical condition. See this youtube video and especially minutes 3:07 and 5.32, which show two of the injuries.
  • 19.21 GMT+2 There are strong rumours that a police raid of the Propylea building of the University of Athens is imminent. The building, on Panepistimiou avenue, is occupied by people currently in minor street-fighting with the cops that have surrounded it.
  • 19.10 GMT+2 At least 134 detentions in Athens and 88 in Thessaloniki, today only. All you internationals in the Greek streets tonight, please take special care, the cops are trying to detain as many internationals as possible to try prove the conspiracy theory that thousands of foreign anarchists invaded the country for tonight.
  • 18.42 GMT+2 For those of you in Athens tonight: It is impossible to access the Polytechnic at this time (18:42 GMT+2), riot police units have surrounded it all around and won’t let anyone approach. We don’t quite know if there is any way to access the Law School, we are trying to find out and go there. There is a gathering called for 9pm at the corner of Messologiou and Tzavela streets, where Alexis was assassinated.
  • 18.31 GMT+2 Riot cops have violated the academic asylum at the Athens Law School. They chased and arrested people outside the gates of the university, at a space also covered by academic asylum. They even crossed into the gates of the university for a few minutes. We have people arrested there, we don’t know how many yet.
  • 18.25 GMT+2 Athens IMC is down; we think the server is under attack and/ or being blocked.
  • 17:20 GMT+2 In Exarcheia, riot police swept through the square. Around 100 of us tried to find refuge in the building of the Migrants’ Haunt on Tsamadou street. The pigs in uniform stood outside the building, tear-gassing through the windows and doors. Tear-gassing in an indoors space is, of course, potentially murderous attack.
  • 14.00 GMT+2 Today’s demonstration had around 15,000 people, met by around 10,000 cops on the streets. The demonstration was attacked only a few minutes after it started: Two eye-witnesses from Occupied London saw at least ten unprovoked arrests right the spot, on the corners of Panepistimiou Avenue and Ippokratous Street.

Update 19 30 6/12/09 from Dimitris via urban75.net

The demo started at Propylaia, in the center of Athens, as all the demos start anyway. Even from the very beginning it was attacked by the police, with extensive use of chemicals, and the comrades responded with stones, fruits and petrol bombs. The university building got taken over by comrades, as well as the building with the offices of the dean etc. It was an effort to take over those buildings as the police was trying to prevent it. The demo started strong, with more than 7000 demonstrators. A lot of anti police banners and slogans, people from the whole left movement of Greece, teenagers, middle aged people, a big mix of people really in the demo.

The demo started but trouble with the police did not finish. At more than 1 points from the side the police tried to break the demonstration, but it was impossible to do so. The demo continued strong and firm towards Syntagma square, the main square of Athens. There police from the Delta and Zita forces (both forces on motorbikes and motorcycles) decided to attack the demo as you did see on the videos that Stella provided. The Delta forces had to flee, as they were outnumbered and lost their motorbikes and some gear as well. Then a big number of motorbikes again attacked, but this time against the Trotskist block that existed on the demo, injuring some of them, especially a middle aged woman, and detaining some. The demo continued towards the building of the greek parliament and then returned towards Propylaia, where clashes against the police continued, with comrades making road blocks on the nearby streets. During the whole duration of the demo, some incidents at Propylaia were taking place, as some comrades had remained behind and were attacking the police with stones. Incidents there continued until earlier, when I think the last comrades left.

In Exarchia here, road blocks have been formed, by people of Exarchia, in order to prevent the police from approaching the murder point of Alexis, where the ceremony is going to take place. I am out of here now, hopefully I will be able to give you a more detailed and better coverage later, as I will have things in my mind organized better.

An another big demo is organized for tomorrow, by students this time. Our “democratic” police forces, have detained a HUGE number of people, more than 100, I am not sure of the exact number, and a lot of these people, will be arrested. One thing is certain. Nothing will remain without an answer.

EVERYBODY ON THE STREETS

Update 19 13 6/12/09 Protests to march the first anniversary of death of Greek teen end in clashes

There’s nothing like blind terror for letting you know you’re alive.Every sensory input suddenly lights up your neurons like a city block decked out for Christmas. You suddenly become aware of absolutely everything around you, decision that you usually kick around your head for minutes are taken in units of times in 100ths of seconds. What you don’t notice is pain.

After being chased on and off by riot cops and those on motorbikes for more than a kilometre I end up with a couple of hundred kids just below the ministry building, there’s no way as both above and below us are platoons of riot cops who keep on shooting tear gas canisters into the crowd despite the fact that there is nowhere to go. I try tosee if I get get passed but say those ahead of me beaten and kicked by the riot squad, forced back into the main mass. A gas canister, shot out of something resembling an old style revolver smashes into the tarmac next to me, richottong and striking my leg. In the general panic, I pay it little attention, worried that I too will next in line for a beating and move back, but where? There is nowhere to go.

Eventually, the gas clears and we realise that we are surrounded, police order us to sit down and start insulting and kicking thoe around the edges. Somebody, injured cries for help, they ignore her and keepon screaming at those on the ground. There are so many people in such a small space that it’s nearly impossible to find room. I squeeze in besides some high school students and looking down see that my jeans are red. Is someone hurt, I Look at the guy next to me who appears to be fine. Then it dawns on me that the blood might ne my own. I left the leg and see the the tear gas anister has taken out a chunk of flesh on my shins. It doesn’t even hurt, strangely enough.

The cops keep on whacking away at those they consider are not complying with their orders and something in me breaks.I’m not what I wanted to achieve or what good I could do but I get up and start shouting at them in English, “I’m a reporter with Reuters ” I lie but that was the first thing that popped into my head,I keep on screaming it as loud as I can, adding that what happens today will be on the news tomorrow again and again. I’m not sure how much they understand but it distracts their attention and they seem to calm down,or at least behave. By that time the rest of the media pack have caught up with us and so the police stand down, having more sense than to beat people on live TV.

Those detained are taken in police vans to the central police station in Thessaloniki and who knows what. There crime simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

With the help of the march’s legal team I manage to get out and find an ambulance which takes me along with another guy hit in the face by a canister to the local hospital. There we see other injured in a similar way, including a young woman hit in the head, afterwards she told me that her camera had been smashed by the police when she attempted to record their abuse.

According to Greek channel MEGA today has been a great success for the authorities and the police’s new hard line has brought results. I think that what they have brought is a new round of escalation which will grow in the coming days. You can see pictures from today on Demotix.

They attacked the demo before it even started , and during by tear gas by stones that the swine were throwing back inside the blocks of the demo and with motorbikes against demonstrators on foot at points of the demo where there wasn’t cohesion

More than 60 the detainments

An elderly woman demonstrator member of EEK (radical left party)is in hospital seriously injured after a swine on motobike attacked the demonstrators at the lower side of Syntagma square From libcom

“…In Athens the protest march called at 13:00 in Propylea was attacked by riot police forces before even starting. Protesters fought back erecting flaming barricades and forcing the police to retreat with use of rocks. Protesters also occupied the rectorial headquarters of the University of Athens in Propylea, lowering the greek flag and flying a black flag in its place. The march continued to Omonoia square where more clashes took place and several shops were destroyed -one consumed in flames. At Syntagma square motorised police forces (Delta team) charged the march from Ermou street. After the charge the Delta-team thugs dismounted and threw rocks at the protesters. As a cause of the police orgy in violence, an elderly member of the Worker’s Revolutionary Party-Trotskyist (EEK) has been reported to be in serious condition due to head injuries: Ms Koutsoumbou, a veteran prisoner of the anti-dictatorship struggle, was hit by a Delta force motorbike during the mounted charge on the crowd. According to Savas Michail, leading member of EEK and major radical philosopher, Ms Koutsoumbou is in intensive care having received far worse hits than during her tortures by the colonels’ junta. One more man has been hospitalised with serious injuries. At the time 60 people are reported detained….”

Update 15 43 6/12/09 check athens.indymedia.org this is from the BBC

Clashes have broken out between police and protesters in Athens as the city marks the first anniversary of the fatal police shooting of a teenager.

Riot police fired tear gas at demonstrators as they marched. People were throwing rocks at police, and rubbish bins were set on fire. The protests are nothing like the riotous scenes of last year, a BBC correspondent says. But aggressive tactics have not endeared police to protesters, he adds. The streets of Athens are filling up with young people dressed in anarchist black as they mark the first anniversary of what for them was a major uprising. Squads of police in riot gear, who after the shooting last year, were regarded as the enemy of youth, are stationed on every street corner. Business along the planned route of the big demonstration have pulled down the steel shutters.

The only way to learn if we can swim is to jump in the water

If we could keep something from last December this is the end of silence. The social explosion was not alone on the streets of Greece, but it came out together with the need for dialogue. The fact, which we are told for years now that “democracy” has no dead ends, was proven brutally to be a cheap lie of the authority. The dead ends are a lot. They materialize in the tenths of our day-to-day problems, in our society’s sickness.

Athens Greece: Cops murder a 15 year old 6th of December 2008 We don’t forget We don’t forgive

So what can we do as a society? Shall we continue to put trust on the them and their lies?

There is a way out of this system which destroys our life, a system whose only function is to reproduce and to manage the corruption that is originally created by it. The way out can be found to each one separately and to everyone together. As long as we can still listen to the message coming out from the insurrection of December 2008.

Which message?

The only way that we can initiate the liberation from the dark reality is to begin deciding by ourselves the matters that concern ourselves. We must realise that the logic “vote every four years and I will do the best for you”, is the logic which reproduces this rotten regime.

We all have a portion of responsibility for our lives and for the societies we live in.

As long as we recognise these responsibilities and take the steps leading to the final cut of the umbilical cord that ties us with the authority, we can begin changing the scenery around us with steady moves… with our goal being, at the right moment, to get rid of the destructive institutions like the parliamentary-representative democracy and to create new ones which will be based on the equal participation of everyone.

These paths were opened since the last December. And these are the paths which we are obligated to continue walking on without fear. In each space, in each neighbour, in the schools and in the universities, in the working spaces, in our stance for the immigrants, in our view about environment… in everything that concern our life.

We prefer to decide for our lives ourselves, even if we make mistakes.

Then these mistakes will be ours too. We will learn, we will move forward, we will really stand on our feet as a society…

FAR AWAY FROM POLITICAL PARTIES AND HIERARCHIES
