Hello world you strange thing you ,im not quite sure what I should do .Should I join the world within ,the one below beneath your skin. The one that takes with out a care, and not take their even share. The one that tells you who to be,and shows you what they think you should see. Or join the world that sees the pain , the suffering for which we are all to blame. To change the way that we are controlled, and shake off all those things we have been told. And live life free from oppression, with out the use of our aggression,  to use the things in our possession, to give back things that we have taken, our minds have now been shaken,  for the truth is there for all to see, stand up and fight and soon we will all be free

A minaret isn’t much to get worked up about. It is a tall, ornate tower appended to a mosque, which is sometimes used to broadcast calls to prayer. Yet, in the arguments of those who wished to ban the construction of minarets, thereby singling out Islam for restriction and opprobrium, they amount to a form of ‘colonisation’. Whether that ‘colonisation’ is identified as a threat to conservative or left-wing values depends on the audience. Some members of the Swiss Socialists justified their support for the minaret ban on feminist grounds, and the feminist writer Joan Smith has attempted to lend this appalling stance some respectability. The Lega Nord, meanwhile, calling for a similar move in Italy, justifies the campaign on the grounds that Italy must remain, like Switzerland, Christian and white. Conservative writers like Michael Burleigh claim that it represents a stand against alleged infringements on European ‘democracy’.

The language of ‘colonization’ is very important in the racist right’s lexicon. These Lega Nord posters remind people that ‘immigration’ to the Americas resulted in Native Americans living in reservations – seriously implying, therefore, that white Europeans might become the victims of a genocide. It is also a language that the BNP is given to use, and of course, it was dramatically pictorialised in the icons of the anti-minaret campaign in Switzerland, with minarets depicted as black missile-like objects covering a Swiss flag, with an ominous looking woman wearing a burqa in the foreground. One cannot help but notice the ‘bad faith’ involved here. Muslims tend to be so targeted precisely because where they are least likely to be assertive, most isolated, and least in a position to defend themselves. They are targeted as a minority, with poor resources for mobilising on their own behalf, not as a colonial power. While we’re about it, might we also notice the militarist implications of such a language? For if Europe is supposedly being colonised, in a way that threatens a fate akin to that of the injuns, then a war of liberation is surely the implied solution. The thugs marching on mosques across Britain, and the fascists who think they don’t go far enough, understand this perfectly well.

A corollary implication is that those who do not rally to the war against ‘Islamic colonisation’, ‘Islamic imperialism’ or the ‘Islamification of Europe’, as it is variously called, are traitors. Now you might think that such language is the preserve of fascists and nutters, ultra-reactionaries, racists, EDL thugs, the BNP, etc. You would be wrong. For example, The Express, expostulating about its phoney ‘revealations’ about government funding for “fanatics who want to kill us”, takes the logical step from its fabrications and fulminates: “It does not take a brilliant detective to work out what is going on here, just an ordinarily observant person: Britain’s cultural identity is being systematically dismantled by a government of traitors.” It is true that the Express takes the most extreme racist line toward Muslims of any of the tabloids, but this is an unabashed plagiarism from the pages of the British Nationalist. As it happens, the charge against New Labour is not only wrong on the facts, but it is politically perverse. No mainstream party has done more to capitulate to racist ideology than the one presently in command. Gordon Brown’s dog-whistling about ‘local houses for local people’, following his tremendously successful ‘British Jobs for British Workers’ gambit, has been followed by more ‘tough but fair’ language and promises of concrete measures to deal with immigration. Brown is particularly concerned, after all, about ‘Britishness’ and ‘British values’. Nothing saddens him more than the idea that we can’t take some pride in the achievements of the empire, and of Anglo-Saxon culture in general. The allegation that this government is insensible of “Britain’s cultural identity” (which appears to consist of being white, Christian, bigoted, ignorant, full of shit, and proud of it) is nonsense.

The main thing that vexes the Islamophobes, supposedly, is violence. If pressed, some of them will readily concede that any violence by Muslims is practised by a negligible minority and by no means incriminates the majority. (Do not even bother asking them to weigh it against the colossal violence of Anglo-American imperialism, which has incited such relatively miniscule violence as has taken place on the European continent.) The majority, though, will insist that such violence, even if practised by a minority, is driven by their commitment to doctrines that are mainstream in Islam. Thus: ‘we are not against Islam, just extremism – but then, isn’t Islam itself extreme’? Their attention to violent ‘extremism’, though, and that of the media and political class in general, is severely curtailed by their obsession with Muslims. Tell me if this sounds familiar. A man is found in possession of explosives, guns, ammunition, and other weapons. He is arrested, charged with terrorism offenses, and is convicted. But he is not a Muslim. He is white, and a BNP member, so his case doesn’t grab the headlines. No one notices that the BNP has a demonstrated propensity for churning out terrorists. Let’s try another one. A pair of students are severely beaten after attempting to defend a woman from a threatening gang. Suppose the gang is a Muslim gang, leering at a white woman, and the students are Ben Sherman wearing Brits on their way to play darts or something equally ridiculous. You would expect headlines from that. Predictably, of course, that isn’t the case: the students are Muslims, as is the woman they were defending, and the attackers are white racists who were taunting the woman for wearing a hijab. So, it’s not much cop, especially since most newspaper editors have it in their heads that wearing a hijab is itself a culpable and subversive act, which can at best be ‘tolerated’. Incidents of both type are increasingly routine, as is their general oblivion in the welter of competing, largely fabricated, stories about the menace of Islam.

Given the pace of reaction across Europe, and the growing hold of this specious, essentialist garbage about Islam, it is unsurprising that an innocuous and sometimes rather beautiful structure can, if the PR is effective, become so suffused with peril and portent for so many. But the minarets are just the start of it. No Islamophobe would be content with what is, at the moment, a symbolic gesture, a super-sized fuck-you. There will be numerous intermediate steps. Sarkozy and his allies may be next with the idea of a ban on the ‘veil’. Someone else may take up the original intended issue of the Swiss reactionaries, and try to outlaw halal butchery. But if the intended effect is to intimidate Europe’s Muslim population and ultimately reduce their numbers, then it can only be a matter of time before ‘peace walls’, ghettos, and forcible expulsion are on the agenda – presuming no one lifts a finger to protest in the meantime. Some Swiss anti-racists have already taken to the streets. They are, at the moment, small in number. But they could not possibly be as small in stature, as pathetic, as ridiculous, as paltry in almost every respect, as that majority of Swiss voters who cast such a petty and vindictive vote.

Lenin’s Tomb

After lagging well behind other forces for most of the year, City of London Police are now making a late surge to take the coveted El Reg prize for most absurd photographic intervention of 2009.

The register are not especially impressed by their sending of seven officers in three cars and a riot van to deal with architectural photographer, Grant Smith, caught filming a church in the City of London. This was overkill, but alongside Kent’s arrest of a photographer for being too tall, as well as interference by various forces with assorted schoolboys, trainspotters and Austrian tourists, it was but small beer.

However, City’s decision to stop and quiz London Tonight reporter Marcus Powell, who was out with an ITN crew filming a story about Mr Smith’s little contretemps with the “boys in blue” shows extreme dedication to the cause of foot-in-mouth policing.

According to a spokesman for City of London Police, Powell was initially asked whether he had a permit to film, and then on showing his press card was allowed to continue.

The real question now is: will police efforts to alienate the public and piss off press photographers continue into 2010? Early indications are that common sense should soon reassert itself and we will finally be able to stop reporting on the increasingly silly interactions that appear to take place on an almost daily basis between police and photographers.

Last week, ACPO put out a strongly worded statement to all forces in England and Wales warning against over-use of anti-terror laws to question and search innocent photographers. Writing in The Independent, Chief Constable Andy Trotter, chairman of ACPO’s media advisory group was blunt: “Everyone… has a right to take photographs and film in public places. Taking photographs… is not normally cause for suspicion and there are no powers prohibiting the taking of photographs, film or digital images in a public place.”

Liberal Democrat frontbench MP, David Heath has been given the go-ahead to raise the issue of alleged abuse of Section 44 terror legislation against photographers with the Home Secretary, Alan Johnson, MP, next week.

Pressure Group “I’m a Photographer Not a Terrorist” has responded to events of the last couple of weeks by calling for a mass turnout of Photographers, professional and amateur “to defend our rights and stop the abuse of the terror laws” on 23 January 2010.

On the other hand, we have been here before. It was about this time last year that the then Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, was reassuring the Commons with guidelines to police on the use of the anti-terror laws. ACPO have regularly issued sensible guidelines on the policing of photography, to little apparent effect: and back in April of this year, Tory MP John Randall triggered a debate in the Commons on the subject.

So whilst it would be nice to imagine that 2009 will be the last and peak year for police madness over photography, the omens are not good, and we would not be entirely surprised if a year from now we were writing a very similar piece, perhaps with another force in our sights

An amateur photographer was arrested at lunchtime 10 12 09 while taking photographs of posters on a building in Hounslow, west London. Photography enthusiast Karol Berezowski, originally from Poland, said officers handcuffed him, before taking him by car to Hounslow Police Station where he was held for three hours. The incident took place at 11.50am on Hounslow High Street.  Speaking to Amateur Photographer. shortly after being released from police custody, Berezowski said he was charged with a public order offence after ‘refusing to take his hands out of his pockets’ when police searched him.

Police said they will not release details of the incident ahead of a possible court hearing. Berezowski said that officers originally told him he would be searched under anti-terrorism laws. Berezowski, who works as a ‘building service engineer’, said that the reason police charged him was ‘abusive’ behaviour, which he denies.

The photographer, who has lived in London for three years, has told Amateur Photographer that he was photographing posters on buildings at the end of Hounslow High Street.  He had been using a classic Leica M6 film camera and claims to have been taking pictures for his portfolio.

The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that a man was arrested today 10 12 09 for a ‘Section 5′ Public Order Offence, at 11.50am, but a spokesman refused to comment further for legal reasons.  The amateur photographer said he has been issued with an £80 fine but is currently seeking legal representation because he plans to take the case to court.  Hounslow Police Station declined to comment when contacted by Amateur Photographer.

Simon said: “If there’s a campaign, and I think the campaign’s aimed directly at me, it’s stupid. Me having a No 1 record at Christmas is not going to change my life particularly. Rattled eh!

I salute Johnnie Void’s spirited advocacy of a STACEY SOLOMON victory for the Xmas No.1. Staceyis obviously a hugely likeable working class girl (give her a chat show) but Susan Boyle and Paul Potts were also likeable proles and did their victories do anything to advance the class struggle comrades. No! Capitalism will always provide individuals a way out of poverty through sport or music. A victory for RATM will be a collective victory – 548,000 on Facebook so far – and bring anti-authoritarian song to millions and boost confidence that the media moghuls can be beaten. And if in one sphere of life.. why not others? Remember comrades – ‘WHEN THE MODE OF THE MUSIC CHANGES THE WALLS OF THE CITY SHAKE’

‘548,000 of people have signed-up to a campaign organised online by Jon Morter, which calls on people to buy Rage Against The Machine’s infamous, insurrectionary 1992 track “Killing In The Name” and send that to the top of the singles chart on December 25 instead of whichever contestant wins the 2009 competition. “Fed up of Simon Cowell’s latest karaoke act being Christmas Number One? Me too… So who’s up for a mass-purchase of the track ‘Killing In The Name’…as a protest to the ‘X-Factor’ b******s?”, explain the Facebook and Twitter groups.

The most memorable line in arguably Rage’s greatest moment is probably “F*** you, I won’t do what you tell me”

OK – there are endless clever arse arguments you can make on this one and I am far to old to know anything about RATM. ‘False choices’ ‘making money out of rebellion’ ‘youth for RATM oldies for Cowell’  ‘middle class kids v proles’ blah blah………..off the fucking fence comrades – and I’ll admit to some initial confusion – but the simple question is ‘ which winner will increase the confidence and combativity of our class. RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE. There i’ve chosen – I await to be shot down…….but dont cop out for neither comrades – it’s far too important for that!

Ian Bone:

URGENT COMMUNIQUE FROM ATHENS ANARCHISTS 9-12-2009

RECENT DAYS HAVE SEEN INCREDIBLE JUNTA ORGIES IN GREECE

EXAMPLES:

1 Cops with guns in the demonstrations
2 Motorbike raids against protesters
3 Cops following peaceful demonstrators in their tracks, wild and indiscriminate arrests
4 Staged events such as the alleged assassination attempt against the rector of the Pritanea
5 An enormous number of vague and even criminal charges and arresting people young and old
6 Closing schools on the pretext of swine flu and the merciless beating of students who wanted to get to their schools
7 Undercover cops kidnapping young protesters
8 Higher level visible collaboration between Golden Dawn neo-nazis and the Police
9 Secret meetings between Chrysohoides and the bosses of the TV channels and journalists to decide on how TV reporting was going to be done over these days
10 Secret covert cameras and helicopters hovering constantly
11 Zero tolerance makes a bitter orange and a stone against a bank a felony and a pretext for a police attack
12 BAN on demonstrations and political gatherings in the conversion areas with massive police intimidation and outrageous filing
13 Hacker attacks on indymedia, and sites of squatted places and TVXS (no borders TV), deleting comments
14 Invasion and PREVENTIVE ARRESTS in many self-managed spaces.
15 In an Orwellian way anarchists and the rebels are referred to “fascists and Nazis!”.
16 Junta-like removal of asylum [in the universities]

AND HOW MUCH MORE!

Some of these things happened in isolation, and some only happened before under the junta in 1967-1974; others have never happened before, only now. They never ever happened altogether in such a short space of time! It seems that the crash which happened here and they are hiding, like the indomitable December, has the power to activate an emergency plan, a new ‘PLASTER CAST’. [repeating the pronuncement of the junta in 1967] These moments are more than historical. We are witnessing for the first time since 1967 an attempt to impose a fascist police coup. If a parliamentary democracy are able to commit those crimes, the junta is something different and we have all have begun to understand that. The anarchist slogans in the streets are beginning to say bluntly: “DOWN THE JUNTA” A collusion of prosecutors, rectors, the upper classes, TV media and police, and still we do not know what other local and foreign forces have been mustered. You hear of missing people. The climate is heavy like unde the junta.

THIS IS NOT THE TIME TO BE SILENT! THIS IS NOT THE TIME TO RELAX!
EVERYBODY IN THE STREETS – SQUATS EVERYWHERE!
PLEASE HELP TO SMASH DOWN THE GREEK JUNTA!
THE REGIME IS GOING THE WAY OF 1967!

Chief Constable Andy Trotter wrote in the Independent: “Everyone…has a right to take photographs and film in public places. Taking photographs…is not normally cause for suspicion and there are no powers prohibiting the taking of photographs, film or digital images in a public place. We need to make sure that our officers and PCSOs are not unnecessarily targeting photographers just because they are going about their business.

This is a copy of a letter sent by the Association of Chief Police Officers to Chief Constables and Commissioners across England and Wales over the weekend:

4 December 2009

To: all Chief Constables and Commissioners

Dear Colleague

Section 44 Terrorism Act and Photography

Adverse media coverage of the police service use of Section 44 powers, when dealing with issues relating to photography, have recently hit the headlines again and suggests that officers continue to misuse the legislation that is available to them. The evidence also suggests that there is confusion over the recording requirements of ‘Stop and Account’ and the actual police powers of ‘Stop and Search’. The purpose of this letter is to clarify the legislation and guidance in relation to these matters.

Stop and Search

Section 44 gives officers no specific powers in relation to photography and there is no provision in law for the confiscation of equipment or the destruction of images, either digital or on film.

On the rare occasion where an officer suspects that an individual is taking photographs as part of target reconnaissance for terrorist purposes, then they should be treated as a terrorist suspect and dealt with under Section 43 of the Act. This would ensure that the legal power exists to seize equipment and recover images taken. Section 58A Counter Terrorism Act 2008 provides powers to cover instances where photographs are being taken of police officers who are, or who have been, employed at the front line of counter terrorism operations.

These scenarios will be exceptionally rare events and do not cover instances of photography by rail enthusiasts, tourists or the media.

The ACPO/NPIA Practice Advice, published in December 2008, is again included with this letter and specifically covers the issues surrounding photography. The guidance also includes the need for clear briefings on the use of Section 44 and it may be appropriate to include photography issues within those briefings.

Stop and Account
Encounters between police officers and PCSOs and the public range from general conversation through to arrest. Officers need to be absolutely clear that no record needs to be submitted to cover any activity that merely constitutes a conversation.

Only at the point where a member of the public is asked to account for their actions, behaviour, presence in an area or possession of an item, do the provisions of the PACE Act apply and a record for that ’stop and account’ need to be submitted. Even at that point, such a discussion does not constitute the use of any police power and should not be recorded under the auspices of the Terrorism Act, for example.

Officers should be reminded that it is not an offence for a member of the public or journalist to take photographs of a public building and use of cameras by the public does not ordinarily permit use of stop and search powers.

Yours sincerely

Reports of photographers being harassed or stopped using bogus interpretations of anti-terror legislation are on the rise. To help raise awareness of the issue and change public perceptions, BJP has begun a new campaign – and we’re inviting you all to join us

British Journal of Photography have a long running campaign to counter the rising paranoia that targets every photographer who shoot images in public places.

There are calling all photographers, amateur or professional, to join there protest by taking part in a visual campaign, designed to raise awareness about increasing restrictions on shooting in tFhe public realm, which together with abuse of police powers and increasing hostility from the public at large, is impacting on photographers every day, in the UK and abroad.

The ‘Not A Crime’ campaign has already got the backing of two of Britain’s leading photographers, Stuart Franklin and Chris Steele-Perkins of Magnum Photos. We invite you to join them by posting a self-portrait of yourself together with a sheet of white card with the phrases ‘Not a crime’ or ‘I am not a terrorist’ (in your first language) to a Flickr group BJP has created. Details on how to do so can be found at www.not-a-crime.com.

Anti-repression demonstration in Athens ends; cops still surrounding the Propylea buildings; attempts to close down the Law school radio station; Resalto arrestees’ bails run into tens of thousands of euros

Wednesday, December 9, 2009

The anti-repression demo that had been called for in Athens ended a few hours ago. Called by far-leftist groups (EEK, Network for Social and Political Rights, and others – sorry if forgetting someone and please add!) the demo was also joined by many anarchists. The cops, for a second concecutive night, were provokatedly standing in front of the courtyard of the Athens University buildings on Panepistimiou Street, blocking the demonstrators’ access to the academic asylum. This, after the fabricated “lethal” attack against the Director of the University of Athens: As we have said already, two Occupied London contributors witnessed the director leaving the area holding his head – but with no sight of any blood, let alone the “heart attack” he supposedly suffered. And yet this “lethal” attack has been used as a perfect pretext for a full-on attack on the academic asylum: Other university directors have openly announced their willingless to reconsider the asylum; already, the Law School’s administration has decided to force-evict the student radio hosted on its premises and to ban the use of its facilities for any “non-academic” purposes.

Meanwhile, the bail for the released comrades from Resalto is running into tens of thousands of euros (18-20,000)  and there is an urgent need to raise funds for their support. More info will be published here very soon.

psifisma

Keratsini is the municipality, where the police raided the anarchist space Resalto and then raided the occupied town Hall as well, arresting 22 in Resalto and 41 in the Town Hall. Until now, some are set free and some other remain in the hands of the police. The Municipal Council of Keratsini published the following resolution (the translation is unofficial):

Resolution No 284

After the sad incidents that took place in our city, the Municipal Council of Keratsini with majority (with Mr Dimitrios Moyrikis and Mrs Sophia Thomarei having the opinion that their submitted resolution should be accepted) decided:

1st/ We declare that we do not tolerate in our city the state repression for political actions and acts.

2nd/ We denounce the attack of the police at the political space RESALTO of Keratsini and at the Town Hall.

3rd/ The political movement RESALTO functions and activates itself in our city with political, artistic, cultural and other events.

4th/ We ask that the 64 arrested citizens that were arrested in our city are set free.

5th/ We declare that no offense or destruction did not take place in the town Hall.

6th/ The move of entry in the Town hall by the 42 arrested for us is a clearly political action and we accept it.

7th/ We denounce the mass media that twisted and counterfeited the facts consciously or due to false information.

8th/ The Administration of the Municipality should organizes a press conference in order to restore the truth, because in our city we consider the political actions legitimate.

The Camp will hold the space for the entire conference, reclaiming one the busiest locations in the world to push for genuine solutions to climate change. So, if you’re not off to Copenhagen then this is the place you need to be. Bring your tent, warm clothes, and ideas for action!

When the tripods first shot up and the rocket stoves got burning, it wasn’t long before the actions started rolling. Prior to the talks beginning, 20 Santas took over the departure lounge at London City Airport as the last flights of hypocrisy left for Copenhagen. Then on Monday, with the summit beginning, activists blockaded the European Carbon Exchange offices sending a clear message that the false solutions on the table will be stopped every step of the way. Meanwhile campers continued cooking, discussing, and plotting as requests to leave were ignored.

Surrounded by opportunity, the camp is preparing for our two week stay. We are the Christmas present under the square’s enormous tree this year, already working well with community groups to collectively push for climate justice during this season of festivity. Those of us remaining in the UK need to demonstrate we are not simply sitting back and letting our “leaders” tear apart the planet, but are enacting the change we need ourselves. But this will only succeed if everyone gets involved for as little or as long as they can.

If  Trafalgar Square can be taken, then Westminster can! Viva Climate Camp, et. al.! Indeed why stop there? there is a nice wall garden at http://www.royal.gov.uk/ now bringing The Class War Home and Climate Chnage sounds fucking good to myself, and one year ago those rioters in Athens Greece gave us this.

Just a thought if those at TRAFALGAR SQUARE get cold….

At 4pm on Saturday 5 12 09, following The Wave of 40,000 concerned individuals, Climate Camp went further and Occupied Trafalgar Square successfully for the planned 48 hours. However, with the doomed Copenhagen Climate Conference only just beginning its two week corporate sponsored farce, Ther’re now not going anywhere, neither are We Love The Earth Centre.

All are welcome to come and help, have a cup of tea and a bun and drop in any ideas suggestions for the public meeting to Reclaim The Earth Centre as a communty space and environment centre on tues 15th at Denaby & Cadeby Miners Welfare Club (7pm)
This is a warm up and welcome event leading up to the public meeting to Reclaim The Earth Centre The meeting has been organised by the people for the people in response to the misuse of public funds and neglectful way that the council and the millenium commission handled the earth centre and its many resources. We will reclaim the land and our rights to decide our own futures!

Friday the 27th Nov – Doncaster climate hearing, more like Doncaster Green Wash! This event was organised by Oxfam, (THOSE WHO BROUGHT YOU THE WAVE) some very good people attended and its fantastic that local people are addressing issues that we all face and talking about ways to be sustainable, unfortunatley there was ‘a wave’ of insincerity from a few but this doesn’t matter working together does!

We love The Earth Centre campaigners went along to pose the question to our MP for Climate Change and Energy -The Scum Bag Miliband. Why has a multi-million pound sustainable living education centre been left to rot for five years?

Watch The Scum Bag Miliband:

http://www.youtube.com/user/thepixiecrew#p/a/u/1/fpeu5RSyJXo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQjtfXqDxi0

From Mr Miliband’s response it seemed strange that he showed very little knowledge of the Earth Centre, curious since we’ve contacted his offices and his colleague, Denaby MP Caroline Flint, neither has responded. Considering Milband’s job title you would think that he would have recognised the significance and true potential of this amazing resource and beautiful space. Also you would think that he would be aware that the MOD are looking to aquire a sustainable living education centre in his area, however he is from Oxford!! (meanwhile New Labour talk of class war (sic)

Local community projects in Denaby struggle to access funding because the Earth Centre swallowed up the quota in the area and this still has reprecusions five years on. Resources were mysteriously flying out of the Earth Centre in the end and we would like to know where they went too as millions were spent on them.

We say reopen the Earth Centre and allow the community to benefit from its resources rather than having to watch the Police and MOD training with guns and dogs and wargame enthusiasts running about with pretend machine guns and smoke screens.

Ed Miliband is at the doomed Copenhagen Climate Conference this is only just beginning those involved are:
