One of the two men who were arrested at Nottingham University under the Terrorism Act 2000 on Wednesday 14th May is facing imminent deportation. Both men were released without charge after having been detained for 7 days. But one of them, a 30-year old member of university staff and non-British national was immediately re-arrested under immigration legislation.

It has been reported that it is decided the original arrest has compromised his visa status, even though he was released without any charges. He now been moved to a detention centre and faces deportation on Sunday 1st June. The man was a well-known, widely liked and active on campus. Students, lecturers and the wider community have started mobilising to stop his deportation. Watch this space for updates.

Two people (one of them a student) who were arrested on the Nottingham University campus last Wednesday using “anti-terror” powers have today been released without charge. After seven days of incarceration, the two men (aged 22 and 30) were released from custody. The manner of the arrests, the intimidating police presence on campus, and the gullible media coverage have raised serious concerns and anger amongst the student body, the academic faculty, and the general public in Nottingham.The arrests were carried out due to the alleged possession of “radical material,” specifically an Al Qaeda manual relevant to the younger detainee’s dissertation, which had been emailed to the other for printing. Despite their own admission that there was no threat to local communities, the police decided to launch a full-blown “terror” operation and put the students, their families and many friends through a colossal amount of stress. Meanwhile, police on campus searched bags and dominated a central area, creating great fear amongst the student community that was totally disproportionate to the apparent ‘threat’ of radical material. The harassment of friends and relatives by the police also raised serious concern.

One of the two was rearrested on his release under “immigration legislation.”

The arrests were precipitated when the younger of the two detainees downloaded an Al Qaeda training manual, widely available on the internet and downloaded in this instance from a US Government website, in the course of his research into political Islam. He emailed this to the older detainee, a member of staff to get it printed.There was never any suggestion that either of the were part of a terrorist cell nor that they posed any threat to anybody else. Police communicated that there was “no cause for alarm within local communities” (see their press statement here), and a spokesperson for the university, who have fully co-operated with the “low-key” operation, said “there is no risk to the university community or to the wider public.”

However, the whole operation seems to have serious and frightening racial overtones. One officer who investigated the case is reported to have said: “This would never have happened if he had been a white student.” The re-arrest of the second student on dubious immigration grounds displays a clear desire on the part of the police to smear the two men in the hope of gaining sympathy from the tabloid press.

Furthermore, the university and police rhetoric during this time period was surprising to many students and academics. Amidst the great amount of rhetoric that the university put out during this period, supporting the police and assuming guilt of its own students, it also spoke of groups or individuals who “unsettle the harmony of the campus.” This seemed to be a direct reference to the peaceful political activism and vocal, peaceful protest that the university now seems to think it can clamp down on under the Terrorism Act.

Finally, and most importantly, this has constituted a huge and serious attack on academic freedom in the university. The arrests raise concerns about the opening of a door to the criminalisation of research into radical movements which necessarily involves the study of contentious primary documents. Bettina Rentz, a lecturer in international security and the student’s personal tutor, said: “This case is very worrying. The student downloaded publicly accessible information and provoked this very harsh reaction. Nobody tried to speak to him or to his tutors before police were sent in. The whole push from the Government is on policy relevance of research, and in this case the student’s research could not be more policy relevant.”

Furthermore, the indefinite incarceration of two innocent people under “anti-terror” legislation has created a prevalent climate of fear on campus. Everyone realises that the police can – and WILL – hold anyone they want to without any evidence or charge for up to 28 days. With an increased police presence on peaceful demonstrations, there is great fear that the police are criminalising peaceful activists using the “anti-terror” legislation.

Concerned students and academics are coming together to decide on the appropriate action to take. A petition has been circulated amongst staff and students, expressing concern about the detentions and demanding that the university acknowledge the “disproportionate response” to the possession of legitimate research materials and a demo on campus is being planned.

According to my opinion, there is no reason whatsoever to celebrate the 60 anniversary of the State of Israel [1]

The proclamation:

First, the State of Israel has been founded as a neo-colonialistic enterprise, seeing the acceptation of UN General Assembly Resolution, 181, in 1947, the socalled ”Partition Plan for Palestine”, without any voice for the native and rightful Palestinian population [2]

Moreover, the UN Resolution 181 was in contrary with the UN Charter regarding the rights of people on selfdetermination

Secondly, due to the onesided proclamation of the State of Israel, by the former zionist politician, Mr D Ben Gurion, dd 14-5 and the following military confrontation between the Arab troops and the zionist troops, the humanitarian consequences for the Palestinian civilian population were disastrous

It is therefore no wonder, the Palestinians call this the Naqba, which means disaster

The onesided proclamation of the State of Israel, by the Israeli politician Mr D Ben Gurion, was the result of the General Assembly UN Resolution, nr 181, dd 1947, by which the members of the UN [3] decided to the ‘partition of the British Mandate Palestine, in a Jewish and an Arab part
Jerusalem was decided to have an international status

Palestine of 1947 is comparable geographically with Israel now, together with the occupied Palestinian territories

Altough there was a passage in the Declaration, that that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine”, by accepting a ”Jewish National Home” in the country of another people, the rights on selfdetermination of the Palestinian people were seriously violated

Even according to the colonial thought of that time, after the depart of the colonial occupation, the political and judicial power of the country should befell to the native population, in an independent Palestine

This is how it happened in African and Asian colonies and also in Middle Eastern countries like Iraq, Lebanon and Syria and the preparation for the independence of Palestine was also established in the Mandatory order of Palestine, which Great Britain officially got from the ”League of Nations’ [5]

However, because of the Balfour Declaration, the whole concept of Palestinian self-determination had been undermined

As well by means of the Balfour Declaration, as later, UN Resolution 181, behind the back of the Palestinian people, a part their country was being given to pioneers, who came from Europe, without any legal right to the country

The writer Koestler says about this Balfour Declaration:

‘With the Balfour Declaration, one nation solemnly promised to a second nation the country of a third.”

Therefore it is not astonishing, that the Balfour-Declaration and the zionistic aspirations and the British colonial role of divide and rule, provoked resistance in the Palestinian society

Mass-slaughters, occupation and etnic cleansings

Humanitarian implications of the war in 1948:

The consequences of the acceptance of Resolution 181, dd 1947 and the onesided proclamation of the State of Israel, led to a war between the Israeli troops and the Palestinian and Arab troops, by which human rights violations and war-crimes were committed, on both sides [6]

Also of importance is to realize, that the Israeli military offensive, Plan Dalet, had the aim of expulsion of the Palestinian people and destroying as many as Arab villages

Referring to that occupation, I quote the ”introduction” to Plan Dalet:

´´a) “The objective of this plan is to gain control of the areas of the Hebrew state and defend its borders. It also aims at gaining control of the areas of Jewish settlements and concentration which are located outside the borders (of the Hebrew state) against regular, semi-regular, and small forces operating from bases outside or inside the state.´´

Regarding the deliberate destruction of Arab villages I quote Section B of the Plan:

´´Destruction of villages (setting fire to, blowing up, and planting mines in the debris), especially those population centers which are difficult to control continuously. … Mounting search and control operations according to the following guidelines: encirclement of the village and conducting a search inside it. In the event of resistance, the armed force must be destroyed and the population expelled outside the borders of the state. ´´ [7]

Etnic cleansings:

One of the most dramatic was the expulsion, by Israeli troops, of more than 750.000 Palestinian inhabitants, from their homes and land

In terms of International Law, those are etnic cleansings, which are strictly forbidden according International Law, article 49, 4th Geneva Convention [8]
This has formed the basis of the Palestinian refugee-problem

Despite the General Assembly UN resolution 194, dd 1948, which summoned Israel, to make those people return to their homes or else give them a financial compensation, either the first [make them return], nor the second [financial compensation] has been executed [9]

Consequence is that those people are condemned to a desperate existence in one of the many refugee-camps

Mass-slaughters:

Moreover, a number of mass-slaughters in the Palestinian Arab villages, by Israeli paramilitary terrorgroups [like Irgun and Stern] have taken place [10]
More than 400 Arab villages have been destroyed

Occupation, from the very beginning:

Israeli troops also conquered 20 percent of the areas, which according to Resolution 181, were the Arab part

The rest of Palestine has been conquered by the Kingdom of Jordan [West-Bank] and Egypt’[Gaza] [11]

Israeli arbitrary military attacks:

Israeli crimes during the occupation mostly take form in arbitrary military attacks in dense populated areas or other civilian areas like refugee-camps, which is a serious violation of International Humanitarian Law

According tio International Humanitarian Law, all conflict parties, are obliged to make at all times, a strict distinction between combatants [military and fighters] and non-combatants [civilians] [14]

When there is no clear situation, for example the presence of fighters in civilian areas, which is often the case by Israeli military attacks, all measures should be taken to protect the civilian population
This is also the fundamental obligation, under the 4th Geneva Convention, of the Occupying Power, which is responsable for the safety, wellfare and wellbeing of ”protected persons” [people, who are living under an occupation)

It is obvious, that the protection seriously fails, by the use of anti-personnel weapons like clusterbombs or F 16's [which is forbidden according to International Law], and firing at homes and in other population areas.

The result is often, many civilian victims, which are war-crimes, since the risk of civilian death could have been foreseen. [15]

This also is the case, according to the Isaeli practice of liquidations of leaders or activists of Palestinian political organisations.
Not only are those liquidations illegal according to International Law, mostly the results are many civilian victims, since the liquidations are executed by bombing refugee-camps, appartments or air-attacks on dense-populated streets.

Punishment for war-crimes:

Not only those military practices stem from a total lack of respect for the right on life of Palestinian civilians, also individual military war-crimes, like shooting civilians [among else, children] or journalists, seldom are punished according to International standards
In some cases, there is whether a light prison punishment of a couple of months, or a sum of money, which have to be paid to the IDF, for breaking the ”military honour code”

In some cases, there is no trial at all [16]

Settlements:

Of great importance to be mentioned is the foundation, from the end of the sixties of the former century, of Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories
Not only this is illegal according to International Law [17], moreover, the settlements are based on mass land expopriations, by which more than 100.000 Palestinians have lost land and homes
Yet apart from the utter inhumanity, those expropriations are contrary with the fundamental rules of the 4th Geneva Convention, that an occupying Power is responsable for the safety, wellfare and wellbeing of ”protected persons” [people, who are living under an occupation)

Despite international condemnation of the settlements, resulting in two UN Security Resolutions, one in 1979 [nr 446] and the other in 1980 [465], Israel has continued the building of the settlements.

Also Israel didn’t respond the agreements in the Roadmap for Peace, to freeze the expansion of the settlements, since untill now, there is an expansion in the West Bank and Eastern-Jerusalem

The building of the Wall, across Palestinian occupied territories:

Despite the verdict of the ICJ [International Court of Justice], dd july 2004, which declared the building contrary with International Law, Israel is building the Wall, with the common displayed contempt for International Law and human rights [18]

Epilogue:

It may be obvious, that ”60 years Israel”, which is celebrating with such an enthousiasm in Israel, supported by certain Western leaders, is a mourning day for the Palestinians

With the right on their side, they consider the ”foundation” of the State of Israel, stemming from the colonial zionism, as a Naqba [disaster]

Not only in respect with the etnical cleansings and mass-slaughters in 1948, but also in respect with the occupation of their land, which is being suffered every day again

11 am Train Station Sheffield, to move onto park hill, for a little walk around and then up the hill to a nice grade 2 listed empty, then back into Sheffield for lunch (say 2 o clock) at the hen n chickens that is over the road from the old Sheffield crown court and now part empty coop buildings and other nice spaces..

Then at 4 over Sheffield to another nice grade 2 listed place i have tried to get into four times and on Saturday 10th may i was greeted by scrapers..

Once done there, a little drink in The Sheaf View, and if some are up for it onto pride on the same day and runs till 10 o clock..

The mother of murdered teenager Jimmy Mizen said yesterday that she felt sorry for the parents of his killer.

Margaret Mizen added that she had happy memories of her 16-year-old ‘gentle giant’ who was killed in an unprovoked attack in a bakery.

i have been asking myself is there any point to friendship? asking do i simply move from Sheffield, but you see due to my own past actions i kinda find myself stuck in the ever decreasing circle of nothingness each day just the same as yesterday, and once i was free.

that is till i began to believe the bullshit and lies of others, now that freedom has gone and i need to implement some action to get it back. but all of this Utopian dreaming has a cost i live on 80 pounds a weeks, take the piss out of a close friend for the rest and therefor i have no real chance of even getting 400 pounds for a laptop. that would mean some form of liberation as i would not have to put up with those who ever so politely to tell me fuck of, and you know i mean this i desire so much to make the middle class history..

When anti-war activists turned up to confront Army recruiters at a Sheffield University careers fair, we weren’t sure what to expect…we definitely didn’t expect to be given a Barclays Bank stall to take over and flood with anti-militarist material, but that’s what we got.

Following in the footsteps of various other militant anti-war protests such as the disruption of arms dealers at a previous careers fair ( http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/sheffield/2007/11/384840.html) and the blockading of an army recruitment office on February 15th ( http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/sheffield/2008/02/391731.html), a few local activists decided to pay the Army a visit at the Sheffield University Spring into Jobs fair. We marched in, blockaded their stall with our trusty “Get your bloody hands off our students” banner, began giving out anti-recruitment leaflets, and waited for university security to throw us out…when a security guard did turn up, he was unexpectedly friendly, and in a bizarre turn of events agreed that, since Barclays Bank hadn’t turned up (which should cheer up any weary activists – a small group of troublemakers managed to get our act together enough to turn up at the fair, but one of the world’s biggest banks totally failed to do so), we could take over their stall.

Having gone down there expecting a brief confrontation followed by a more-or-less humiliating ejection, we were instead given a space inside the careers fair to disrupt the parade of glossy corporate recruiters with our tatty homemade banners and class-based anti-militarist leaflets. This was especially handy since there’s a campaign being launched to get the students’ union to ban military recruitment altogether, so we were able to spend a few hours gathering signatures in support of the motion from within the belly of the careerist beast. The weirdness of the occasion crossed over into being positively dreamlike when a friendly graduate recruiter approached us, explaining that he was concerned our banners (the “…bloody hands…” one and another reading “100% need not apply”) didn’t make it clear enough that we were targetting the army, and gave us a plan of a power plant so we could scrawl anti-military slogans on the back.

It’s worth noting how easily we managed to drive the military recruiters away – we’d been expecting some macho meatheads who’d get aggressive with us, but instead when we turned up and unfurled our banners the guy behind the stall (a Colonel, according to his nametag), just legged it and waited until we’d retreated to our stall before he got back behind his. A security guard explained that he didn’t want to get into any confrontations, which seemed to raise the question of why the delicate flower had joined the sodding Army in the first place. Should also mention that as there were a few animal liberationists present, and the animal-abusing scum of Procter & Gamble had a stall at the fair, we also managed to find a bit of room for anti-P&G material. I can’t find any info on how much stands at this one cost, but stalls at the next careers fair are priced at £920 (plus VAT) for a small stand and £1020 for a big one, which means that every corporate employer there would’ve paid around a grand for their space, while we got to stand there agitating against the military (and animal testing, and the capitalist system that drives all these horrors and many more) for free. Result!
